The pop icon discusses his continued love of the stage/film-musical form. Featuring many examples of his work, incuding tunes from the films The Lion King and The Road to El Dorado and the current West End hit Billy Elliot.
When Elton John (above) realised that he had to channel all his creative energies into writing a song about a warthog he admits that, for a moment, he thought his career might be over. The wild-pig related tune he came up with, however, was part of his Oscar-winning score for The Lion King, with lyrics by Tim Rice, and opened a door that allowed him to pass from a massively successful run in pop to a blossoming career in musicals. He makes a great guest for Elaine Paige, as he has no qualms about telling her what he really thinks of shows based around the greatest hits of some of his fellow pop stars of the 1970s (he apologises to his friends in Queen and damns Rod Stewart by not mentioning him by name at all!). Elton repeats his determination not to hark back to the music of his past. Writing the music for London's West End hit Billy Elliot has only fired his enthusiasm, he tells Paige. Whatever you might think of his notorious, queeny tantrums, in this interview he comes across as upbeat, passionate and inspired.
