In the early 40s, a dispute between American musicians, led by James Petrillo , and the record companies resulted in a two-year ban on recording, forcing vocalists like Frank Sinatra , Dick Haymes and Bing Crosby to make records without backing musicians. Bob Holness discusses the causes and effects of the ban and plays some of the remarkable a cappella discs made by singers as well as some records that exploited loopholes in the ban.
