As a young girl singing in the choir in New York, she was known as the "loud alto" and was soon talent-spotted. Asked to perform in the famous nightclubs of Paris, she mixed with artists like Mistinguett and Josephine Baker.
She then worked in London for a series of Ivor Novello musicals.

Tony Staveacre raids the record library for the best tracks of recorded tango music from around the world. The roots of the tango are said to be found in Spanish dance, Cuban carnival parades, and North African religious rituals. In South America, it became the music of the brothels and generated a new dance style that emulated Creole knife fights.
