As a young girl singing in the choir in New York, she was known as the "loud alto" and was soon talent-spotted. Asked to perform in the famous nightclubs of Paris, she mixed with artists like Mistinguett and Josephine Baker.
She then worked in London for a series of Ivor Novello musicals.
In tonight's programme, she talks for the first time about her private life and her recording career. Producer Margaret Howard
