Today eight of the world's leading golfers meet in the first round of 36-hole matches over the West Course at the Wentworth Club, Surrey. By Saturday the field will have been reduced to two, who will be playing for the first prize of 15,750. The distinguished entrants include- Tony Jacklin. the Open Champion, and Maurice Bembridge , taking part as a result of winning the News of the World Match Play Tournament at Walton in early September. Gary Player , who has already won the tournament three times, will be defending his title.
There is reasonable compensation for the four players who do not survive today's first round - they will each receive a cheque for £ 1,150
