Margaret Juntwait presents a performance of Mozart's first operatic masterpiece, live from the New York Metropolitan Opera House. Idomeneo, King of Crete, has escaped a shipwreck by promising to sacrifice to Neptune the first person he meets. That person is Idomeneo's son Idamante. 7.00 Twenty Minutes: The Last Jew on Crete
Idomeneo tells of shipwreck and the return of an extraordinary man to the island of Crete. it has a parallel in the story of Nicholas Stavroulakis. In the 1950s, Stavroulakis, whose roots are in Crete, arrived on the island after the destruction of the Jewish community by the Nazis. Here he muses on how he restored the crumbling Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Hania, and has acted as the city's Rabbi, much of the time for a community of one - himself! Introduced by Rory MacLean.
