Kokoschka's portrait of his mistress Alma Mahler is the starting-point of David Chandler's play. Shattered by the 1914-18 war, and abandoned by Alma, Kokoschka creates a life-size replica of Alma - a fetish-doll and perfect lover: the Woman in Blue. Is this a symptom of madness, or an attempt to retain his sanity?
