As a film director, Kazan's work includes On the Waterfront and East of Eden, and on stage includes Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and A Streetcar Named Desire.
He was a founder member of the radical 'Group Theatre' which developed method acting, and in 1952 he named his former colleagues as communists before members of the House Un-American Activities Committee.
