Over the past 300 years scholars have made many suggestions as to the identity of Soma - the divine drink of some Indian religions.
R. Gordon Wasson , an American banker, who has made a lifetime study of the role of plants in religious cultures, has suggested recently that Soma was a mushroom. His evidence has been drawn painstakingly from such diverse sources as the Rg Veda, the practices of Siberian tribes-men, and the philology of central European languages.
PETER MUNN talks to GORDON WASSON and also to DR WENDY O'FLAHERTY of the School of African and Oriental Studies, London University, about the origin of the theory that Soma is a mushroom and its significance in Indian religion today. Compiled and narrated by PETER MUNN
