with an appreciation of David Bowie
'He was openly androgynous and bisexual before it was chic to be either of those things. He inspired both punks and new romantics and virtually started "glam rock" in the early 70s. He pioneered the use of synthesised instruments by a major pop artist and managed to appeal to heavy metal fans. Through it all he generated an awe-inspiring series of hit singles. It was quite an achievement to go through all those changes and still turn out the hits. He was certainly the most influential British artist of the 70s and it is not surprising that he should have scored such a success on Broadway in The Elephant Man because he had already proved he was a multi-talented gentleman.'
