Ever since it was created by Alvin Ailey in 1960, the ballet Revelations has brought audiences to their feet. Thomas DeFrantz traces the story of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater's signature work, inspired by the spirituals and by the black Baptist congregations of Ailey's Texas childhood.
