When did milk become part of human diet and how did its arrival influence the emergence of cities and civilisation? Archaeologists and chemists are examining ceramics and pottery shards from the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and finding milk residues that are thousands of years old. Ironically, Professor Julia Polak found herself suffering from the very disease she was researching. In 1995 she developed primary pulmonary hypertension and it rapidly became apparent that a heart and lung transplant was her only chance of survival. She was told that she had just two years to live.
