1: Do You Speak Pitmatic? The dialect of coastal Northumberland has been called the most beautiful in England. It has, until recently, encompassed some of the most heavily mined areas of the country. Last month, more than 80,000 students took up places at British universities on 4,500 different science courses, ranging from agriculture to microelectronics. Quentin Cooper meets a group of first-year physics and astronomy students. Once the initial excitement has worn off, the students will settle down to three years intensive study, and at the end of their courses, they will have to decide whether or not to pursue careers in science.
