From Blackpool via Cambridge University, he moved to the United States, where he has lived for half a century. Jazz enthusiast, golf connoisseur, lover and master of language, he has kept a shrewd commentator's eye on events on either side of the Atlantic. 'I'm an observer' he says, 'noting the changes.'
