In April 1986 Sudan held its first democratic elections for 18 years. As expected, Sadiq al Mahdi, leader of the Umma Party, emerged as the winner and now leads the civilian coalition government. Great grandson of the Mahdi, Sudan's new Prime Minister has been described as one of the toughest and most highly-educated African politicians.

Like a Wolf at a Live Heart A feature by julia STONEHAM based on the letters and poems of the American poet ANNE SEXTON (1928-74) with Morag Hood
Anne Sexton started writing poetry while in a psychiatric hospital after her first serious breakdown. She soon attracted the attention of critics both in the USA and in Britain and came to be regarded as one of the best talents of her generation. Successful, much in demand, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a mother of two children, she committed suicide in October 1974.
