Anne Sexton started writing poetry while in a psychiatric hospital after her first serious breakdown. She soon attracted the attention of critics both in the USA and in Britain and came to be regarded as one of the best talents of her generation. Successful, much in demand, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a mother of two children, she committed suicide in October 1974.
