He was capable of the heights of poetic exaltation and of the depths of self-degrading alcoholic stupor. He achieved fame as a poet, great distinction as a university lecturer, but he lived on his nerves and his emotions.
On 7 January 1972, John Berryman, aged 57, walked to the Washington Avenue Bridge and jumped to his death.
