Introduced by Sue MacGregor With almost a fifth of Britain's population now aged over 65, it's easy to see why the concept of sheltered housing has been so widely promoted in recent years. A small and manageable unit - with a resident warden - would seem to meet the conflicting demands of frailty and independence. But how desirable is it in practice?
CHERYL ARMITAGE visits Sheffield and Bournemouth to hear the pensioners' points of view.

A Man Alone
Three plays by ANDREW RISSIK
1: Anthony
Philip 's friends consider him a success. He has written novels, produced television programmes - made a name for himself. But he is dogged by a sense of failure and by the recollection of a friendship that started at prep school in the 1930s, when he first met Anthony - a friendship that was to go tragically wrong.

'They'd broken down the door. I just stood there shaking - it was like a nightmare.'
'Once you're burgled, you've lost what you've treasured and it's most unlikely you'll get it back.'
One in every 40 householders a year are now victims of a burglary. Chris Serle investigates some of the causes and effects of this crime wave. He follows the police checking for clues in a ransacked house, talks to victims about their reactions, asks burglars why they commit this crime and seeks advice on just how you can secure your home and your property. This documentary is followed by a phone-in when listeners will be able to put their questions to Superintendent
Philip Veater , Deputy Director of the Home Office Crime Prevention Centre, and Helen Reeves , Director of the National Association of Victims Support Schemes.
