The gentle art of flower arranging used to be part of gracious living large country houses with gardens to match. Today that gentleness has hardened and a hint of aggression has crept in with the flower arranging competition. The beginning of June saw the first of this year's national competitions. Its theme was 'Dance to the Music of Time'. Marjorie Lofthouse joined the competitors and judges during the festival at Harrogate to eavesdrop on the preparations, judging and prize-giving. The 1950s and 60s were a boom time for folk music, the Radio Ballads, Come All Ye Bold Miners, and the Aldermaston Marches. A thousand folk clubs throughout the country provided a good living for professional folk singers.
