The Tin Drum
Just over 25 years ago a novel was published in Germany which told the story of the Third Reich's decline and fall from a fresh perspective - that of a dwarf. The book captured the imagination of a new and complicated generation of Germans who searched for the answers to an unasked question: how did it happen - and why? More than any other book since the war it attracted the attention of critics and readers in America and Britain and found a second life as a film which won both the Palme d'Or at Cannes and a Hollywood Oscar.
Phillip Brady , Reader in German at Birkbeck College talks to Gunter Grass , author of the novel;
Volker Schlondorff , director of the film; critics who reviewed it and writers who were influenced by the largest selling European novel since the war.
Producer CARROLL MOORE
