"I have long had a wish to try my hand at this kind of music...." Tchaikovsky was 36 when he started composing, in 1875, the first of his three ballet scores. Ahead of its time, it was not until 20 years later that Petipa and Ivanov gave "Swan Lake" the choreography it deserved, and launched Prince Siegfried, Odette/Odile and their attendant swans into ballet companies around the world.
Tomorrow night London Festival Ballet premières its new production, and Paul Allen follows the preparations and rehearsals with director John Field, designer Carl Toms, and soloists Jay Jolley, Patricia Ruanne and Mary
McKendry, with Michael Kitchen as the voice of Tchaikovsky.
