Since the war, drama has become an increasingly important form for new writers: a great variety of talent has been drawn to the theatre, and many new dramatic forms and styles have emerged. JOHN RUSSELL BROWN considers some of the dramatists who have come into prominence during the 70s and 80s.

Bill Ellis is now a painter and writer. At one time he was Sales Manager for an engineering firm, as well as a sportsman and happy family man. Then one night in 1968 a virus struck, leaving him paralysed and speechless, but with his mind unimpaired Jill Cochrane tells of his struggle to build a new life out of frustration and despair.
