Trees are the glory of the landscape, but they need care and protection if we are to be able to enjoy them to the full. Choosing the right tree for the right site needs thought, and planting and aftercare are vital too. Tree specialists Roy Lancaster and Bill Matthews join Jill Burridge to offer ideas and advice on planting, pruning and caring for tpees, not only for the private gardener, but for those interested in planting and conservation. The Northern Frontier
Hadrian's Wall is one of the great memorials to the Roman Empire; a symbol of the power and authority of the Emperor in Rome. But why was it necessary to mark the northern frontier in Britain by such an elaborate defensive system of ditch, wall forts, milecastles and towers? What was the real function of the wall, and what was life like for the Roman soldiers posted to the forts?
To find answers, Malcolm Billings visits the wall with Graham Webster , an authority on the Roman army, and talks with other archaeologists who have studied the history of this unique monument. Producer
