An American neurologist has discovered a drug that greatly improves the condition of patients with a rare muscular disorder called myoclonus. Unfortunately, the drug is expensive to make and the number of sufferers is small. The major drug companies argue that it would be uneconomic for them to develop and market the substance - the potentially useful drug has become a commercial 'orphan.'
