Mrs Emmeline Lucas (known as Lucia) and Miss Elizabeth Mapp were created by the novelist E. F. Benson during the latter part of his life when he was living in Lamb House at Rye. In six books he draws outrageously satirical portraits of these two monstrous middle-aged women and their hangers-on, and never denied that the town of Tilling, in which their battles for social and cultural superiority are fought, was remarkably similar to Rye. This celebration of Mapp and Lucia is devised and presented by Aubrey Woods , with extracts from Benson's memoirs read by Gerald Cross. Producer PAMELA HOWE BBC Bristol
