In the darkness of an Arctic gale the trawler Howe crashed into rocks at the foot of the high cliffs of the isolated North Atlantic Bear Island.
Other trawlers, obeying the unwritten code of deepwater fishermen, raced to her aid: none could get close because of fierce seas and those suicidal cliffs. While Hull trawler Pennine stood by in case Howe broke up, other trawlers managed to put men ashore on the lee side of the island. But could they possibly cross the mountains and attempt to save the crew before the seas smashed the Howe to pieces?
