The Span of Years
A plaice has been known to live to the age of 35. a swift to 21. a tortoise to at least 152 years. These are the Methuselahs of their species, so far as we know, but what length of life can the ' average animal ' expect?

How I Came to Help People by GEOFFREY PARKINSON with Martin Jarvis and Miriam Margolyes
Geoffrey Parkinson describes this autobiography as ' one man's struggle to failure.' As a schoolboy he had a vision of his future life; it left little room for optimism. But nobody can throw in the sponge at 16, so what was he to do with himself?
Producer SHAUN MACLOUGHLIN
In 1916 at the age of 31 George Butterworth , one of Britain s most promising composers, was killed at the Battle of the Somme, while ' defending a trench.'
His interest in music started at school and continued at Oxford. He was a perfectionist. Before he went away to war he destroyed most of his manuscripts. In this account of his early life. his search for the enduring folk music of England, and his premature and tragic death, we hear again his elegiac ' A Shropshire Lad Rhapsody '; also several of A. E. HOUSMAN 'S poems which Butterworth set to the most enchanting melodies.
