A series of five programmes on major political trials of this century
3: The Trial of Gandhi
In 1922 Mahatma Gandhi was put on trial before a British judge for the only time in his life. Perhaps no more courteous - or curious - trial has ever taken place in British legal history. If the result was something of an anti-climax, the trial nevertheless was revealing of Gandhi's character and methods, as well as of the British attitude to their ' civilising mission ' in .the Indian sub-continent.
The programme describes the background to this strange trial as well as the trial itself.
Introduced by FRANCIS WATSON with Charles Lewsen as Mahatma Gandhi and the voices of GARARD GREEN HECTOR ROSS and JOHN RYE
Compiled by FRANCIS WATSON and HALLAM TENNYSON
