DRAMA OF THE WEEK Bleak House 8.00pm BBC1
We're halfway through this mesmerising serial and it shows no sign of letting up. Tonight, there's a sense of the narrative turning a corner. One astonishing scene towards the end (I won't divulge details) is likely to leave the entire viewing audience shattered and weepy - it certainly left me an emotional wreck.
Before that, there's more nastiness from that prowling wolf Tulkinghorn, so deliciously brought to life by Charles Dance. He gets hold of something he has waited a long time for, but that doesn't stop him sharpening his claws.
Meanwhile, Phil Davis continues to have a ball as the repulsive "Shake me up, Judy" Smallweed, who tonight picks over the remains of Krook's little empire, looking for loot.
As ever, each frame is composed to perfection, each face lit like an oil painting, and the acting is out of this world. You might want to take the phone off the hook. David Butcher Phil Davis's big break: page 44 Your weekly catch-up: page 48.
