TODAY'S CHOICES
HISTORY
Oliver Cromwell: Warts and All 10.35pm BBC1
This rather good dramatised history serves as a useful companion to BBC 1 's excellent drama series, Charles II - the Power and the Passion.
The ever-marvellous Jim Carter fits the role of Cromwell perfectly, and there are plenty of useful history lessons in here that older children will enjoy (though be warned, there are some bloody bits).
There are contributions from historians, including Professor Richard Holmes, and the battle sequences are well done. With reconstructions and occasionally borrowing scenes from the BBC I drama, Oliver Cromwell: Warts and All tells the story of a Fenland farmer who became one of the great figures in British history. As Prof Holmes ruefully points out, there's nowhere for admirers to go to pay their respects. Months after Cromwell's death, Charles I's widow insisted that Cromwell's body be dug up and executed for treason. His rotting head was left on a pike.
Naturally, Cromwell remains a controversial figure. He saw himself as a holy warrior, and with his Puritan New Model Army routed the hated Cavaliers in a civil war that tore the country apart. But towards the end of his life, though he rejected the role of king, he did adopt some of the trappings when he assumed the title of Lord Protector.
In telling an absorbing story, Oliver Cromwell: Warts and All (he coined the phrase himself, insisting his portrait painter didn't spare any blemishes) is admirably thorough. (Alison Graham)
