What on earth did EastEnders do before the advent of the lovely Alfie (Shane Richie)? He's kind-hearted, cheerful, thoughtful and never - not yet, anyway - shows any inclination to beat anyone to a pulp (always a big bonus in a soap that could occasionally be mistaken for Gangs of New York). In all, he's a very welcome addition to the Albert Square tapestry.
Tonight, with his usual perspicacity, Alfie realises that something is badly wrong with Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) after last night's traumatic events. Naturally she's putting on a brave face, but Alfie knows that she's badly hurt. Thus he announces a little surprise that will cheer her up no end. But before she takes Alfie up on his offer, Kat has to clear the air with her dreary ex-lover, Dr Trueman. (Alison Graham)
