The British Academy Television Awards
8.00pm BBC1
The starry night highlighting the best of British television will be dimmed for a moment in memory of Jill Dando who was to have co-presented the ceremony. Now Michael Parkinson alone will be host at the event and he will be joined by Charlie Dimmock, Jane McDonald, Dale Winton, Ronnie Corbett and loan Gruffudd to present individual awards.
The awards boast two new categories for best soap and best feature as well as the Lew Grade Audience Award for the most popular programme, the winner of which has been decided by our readers, along with BBC local radio listeners and GMTV viewers.
In general, the nominations are dominated by BBC programmes with the classic adaptations Our Mutual Friend and Vanity Fair and the drama A Rather English Marriage boasting a total of 22 nominations in all.
