Spiritually pure but physically corrupt, India's river Ganges is, to Hindus, the source of purification - to wash in it is to be cleansed of the sins of a lifetime. Hindus worship by it, are buried in it, and some even drink from it. But now, swamped by the sewage of 200 million people, the cleanser of sins needs cleansing itself.
Ironically, this new challenge has been brought by the pace of progress in India with the arrival of the water closet.
Since 1986 scientists and technicians have been engaged in the world's most ambitious plan to clean up a river. The aim is to achieve bathing-quality water along the entire length of the river, over 2,500 kilometres. It involves providing new areas to bathe, new arrangements for cremating bodies and persuading industry to take its pollution elsewhere.
But the most important scheme is to treat the sewage and monitor the entire river to decide what needs treatment most and when.
