Hatfield Main
Hatfield Main is a pit in the Doncaster area of the Yorkshire coalfield, where the local branches of the NUM are among the most loyal supporters of the present strike. After nearly 11 months the people of Hatfield, miners and their families, talk about the stresses and strains they have been through together. 'We're all from working-class families and in times like this we know how to look after ourselves. These lads will carry on indefinitely fighting for their jobs.'
Only a handful have broken that solidarity and returned to work - and they're branded scabs. One man, who has had his house daubed with paint and his windows broken, explains: 'My family and my kiddies come before any of my friends, and that's why I went back to work.'
For working miners and for strikers, life and work in the village will never be the same again. Researchers
