Professor Briggs looks backward from R. H. Tawney 's book in 1921 over the relation of religion and economics in Victorian England. In spite of great efforts by the Churches to convert England to Christianity the industrial working classes were estranged from ' formal Christianity.' Why? There are many answers and the subject needs investigating.
