Maria Egiziaca was written in 1931 and first performed the following year in the Carnegie Hall, New York; the composer intending it as a concert work, though it has been given stage performances. It tells the story of Mary of Egypt, who was a harlot in Alexandria in about the fifth century A.D., but changed her way of life and made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem, finally withdrawing to the desert where she lived the life of an ascetic, doing good works and performing miracles. The work ia in three scenes: On board ship-Before the Temple-In the desert, near the Jordan.
