Gerald Yorke talks about Hong Kong and its significance as a China base for daya when the ' bamboo curtain ' was drawn to the foreigner, as it is today. Mr. Yorke, who has made a study of British trade in China, reviews the first of a series of books on British territories recently publisihed by the Colonial Office.

The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors has arranged an exhibition called * Five Centuries of Maps and Map-making ' which is open at 12 Great George Street, S.W.I, until July 4. Eva Taylor, Emeritus Professor of Geography in the University of London, speaks mainly about the personalities and methods of the surveyors and the beauty and precision of the early estate plans.
