It was on the occasion of the twenty-first anniversary of the formation of the Griller String Quartet, which occurred last November, that Sir Arthur Blisa decided to write a work specially for these four musicians, whose unique achievement it was to have played together for so long. His Second String Quartet, which was the outcome, was sent to California (where the Griller Quartet is in residence at the University) movement by movement as it was written, with the exception of the finale, which reached the players in New York on their way to Europe. They rehearsed the work on board ship and were due to play it for the first time at the Edinburgh Festival yesterday. A recording of tonight's performance will be broadcast in the Third Programme tomorrow; next week the Grillers are to play the work in the Isle of Wight at one of a series of concerts arranged by J. B. Priestley and Professor Gerald Abraham ; and in January they will perform ir in New York. Harold Rutland
