Early in 1939 the small Indian state of Aundh adopted a new constitution based on the principles of 'village democracy' advocated by Gandhi. Francis Watson was these to help, and in this programme he recalls what 1939 meant to him not only in the midst of this experiment but in his wanderings far and wide in India while the war clouds were gathering in the West.

Talk by Professor F. E. Adcock
These two portraits, of Antony and of his la>t and greatest rival, the young Octavian (the future Emperor Augustus), are also a study of one of the most crucial periods in European history. ' Octavian's victory,' Professor Adcock says, ' the response to Antony and Cleopatra's challenge, meant that the Mediterranean world was united and the day of an Eastern and Western Empire was deferred for centuries.'
