Talk by Professor Gordon N. Ray , of the University of Illinois
' It is the unwritten part of books that would be the most interesting,' Thackeray once wrote. The unwritten part of his own novels, ' Esmond 'and' Pendennis,' is the story of how his own life is reflected in their pages. Professor Ray presents this story with evidence drawn from unpublished documents.
Professor Ray, whose edition of the letters and private papers of Thackeray substantially increased our knowledge of the novelist, has been researching in this country in preparation for a biography of Thackeray.
