Mr. Collier believes that the effect of science on the human imagination has been immense. The extraordinary success of the physical sciences has undermined our belief in any reality that transcends the world we can see and touch, with the result that we no longer regard suffering and misfortune as a moral discipline but as sheer frustration. Mr. Collier's talk is based on his forthcoming book ' The Science of /Humanity '
