Colin Howson was first engaged as a church organist when he was twelve, and as a cinema organist when he was seventeen. Before taking up his appointment at the Regent Theatre, Bristol, he was at Sheffield, Leicester, and London, and he was also a pianist in Sydney Phasey's Orchestra (now at the New Victoria, Bradford).

W. J. Cotton, conductor of the choir, was a chorister at the age of six. He sang at the first Diocesan Choral Festival, held at Exeter Cathedral in 1886 when he was eight years old, and four years later entered the Cathedral as a chorister boy. In 1915 he became conductor of the Exeter Male Voice Choir, which has broadcast since 1932.
