The Exeter Hall Salvation Army Band was formed in Plymouth nearly fifty years ago. Periodical open-air meetings are held in the vicinity of the Mayflower Stone and Monument, which marks the spot where the Pilgrim Fathers sailed away from our shores. 
With a few exceptions the musicians have received their entire training under bandmaster S. G. Brookes , who has been leader for the past eleven years. 
Much could be recorded of the rough handling received in the early days of the band as the result of unfriendliness and misunderstanding. The Salvation Army drum always proved the first object of attack, and often arrived back at the Citadel in pieces. 
Visits have been paid to the prisons at Mutley (now closed) and Dartmoor, and the band has been as far afield as Truro, Brixham, Dartmouth, Wadebridge, Camborne, Bude, St. Austell, Launceston, New-quay, Teignmouth, Newton Abbot , Penzance, and London. 
The band made its first broadcast in the West of England programme in May last year.

This fortnightly feature for sports fans opened on New Year's day. In tonight's broadcast there will be eye-witness accounts of three Association football matches (Rovers v. Gillingham, Torquay v. Swindon, Bournemouth v. Notts County), a Rugby match (Bristol v. Swansea), and the finals of the English Hockey trials held at Weston-super-Mare. There will also be talks on the West of England Darts Championship and the Cheltenham Hunt Festival.
