Opening with a story of old Bristol by F. A. Wilshire then West to Devon for songs by The Joseph Jenkins Singers and tales of the sea by Walter Barnes concluding with Cornish stories by Bernard Fishwick and songs of the tinners by Bernard Fishwick and Chorus
The story with which F. A. Wilshire opens this programme deals with the privateers of old Bristol in the eighteenth century. They were Bristol-built ships, manned by Bristol men. Listeners will hear of one of the famous voyages, and Joseph Jenkins 's Singers will sing one of their broadsheet songs.
Walter Barnes , who tells stories of the Devon fishermen, comes from Brixham, where he is as well known as the Brixham trawler. Bernard Fishwick , who tells Cornish stories, started out to be an engineer, combining practical work in an engineering works in Chesterfield with a three-year course at Sheffield University. He worked with Dr. Harry Moreton at Plymouth, and sang at Guildhall concerts, with the Torquay Municipal Orchestra, and at the Penzance Orchestral concerts. Since 1931 he has devoted his entire attention to music and drama. He first broadcast from Plymouth in 1927.
