The Bath Guitar Octet was formed recently from the Original Bath Banjo Band of 1908 in which the Director, Frances Tarrant Bailey , was at that time piccolo banjoist. In 1918 she took up the study of the Hawaiian Steel Guitar, and listeners have heard her solo broadcasts with this instrument. The Hawaiian Steel Guitar which she uses is a genuine native instrument differing very largely in tone and construction from the instruments normally used and converted for use as steel guitars by the adaptation ot special fittings. The object of forming the Octet was to prove that, given suitable scores, a combination of stet-l guitars could give a performance of works not necessarily associated with the South Sea Islands.
