Vera Crawford-Phillips began to play the piano at the age of four. Her first broadcast was at Savoy Hill when at the age of eleven she played in the Children's Hour. Later, she won a scholarship at Trinity College of Music. At the Bristol Eisteddfod in 1934, she won the Violet Ashley Trophy, and in 1935 was placed first in the Gold Medal Class.
Elsie Eaves has been in every type of show, both serious and otherwise. She took part in many of the Hurdy-Gurdy programmes when her numbers ranged from those of Hetty King and Marie Lloyd to those of Gatti-Curci.
