The Looe Fishermen's Choir

The Looe Fishermen's Choir, conducted by Harold Mutton, is probably the only choir of its kind in the country, for it is composed of men who are directly connected with the fishing industry of the town. Among the members are those who build the luggers, the skippers and their crews (the conductor is Skipper of The Seagull), those who buy and sell the fish, those who pack them into barrels, and the barrel makers themselves. The sea, however, has a changing time-table, and a practice with a full choir is very rare. On the other hand, small groups of fishermen are often to be seen on the quay or in the shelters trying over some line of music from the work they are studying. Although times have often been bad in the fishing industry the Looe Fishermen's Choir, by means of concerts, has collected hundreds of pounds for charities in the district. This Choir broadcast for the first time in the West Regional programme from the Foster Hall, Bodmin, on July 4.

Elsie Griffin says that she has tried every kind of singing-Concert, Oratorio, Concert Party, Revue, Vaudeville, and Musical Comedy. Most of her career has been spent with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. She has now joined the Carl Rosa Opera Company in order to try Grand Opera for a change.
