The action of the play begins in Edinburgh in the year 1693, and is continuous. The epilogue takes ptace in Holland a few years later.
The scenes are laid in the Justice
General's office ; a moorland road in Berwickshire; a bedroom at Linhope; the drawing-room at Polwarth; a morning-room at Polwarth ; the Polwarth Vault beneath the Kirk ; Lieutenant Leslie's quarters at Polwarth; a bedroom and entrance-hall at Polwarth ; and in the music-room of a Dutch house.
