Selkirk Common Riding is the most compact and most easily understood of all the Border festivals. It is also one of the oldest and goes back at least to the time of Floddcn, when one man out of eighty returned from the stricken field bearing an English banner and an English halberd. The ceremony is a reminder of the days when a burgh owning land had to hold a regular beating of its bounds in order to fend off the jealous laird.
