John Loudon Macadam , after a full and adventurous life, died at Moffat in his eighty-first year in 1836. This special service commemorates not only the maker of modern roads, but one whose energy and character represent many of the best features of the Scottish race. He travelled widely in Scotland, England, and America, and he once stated that between 1798 and 1814 he had covered over 30,000 miles of roads in Great Britain alone.
He was appointed General Surveyor of Roads in 1827 and although a knighthood was offered him, he declined it. He lived latterly in England and it was while returning from one of his yearly visits to Scotland that he died at Moffat.
