The Opening Speech of the Midlothian Campaign delivered by the Rt. Hon. W. E. Gladstone at Edinburgh,
November 25, 1879
EACH INSTALMENT of ' Northern Eloquence' is devoted to a reading—or rather a dramatic recitation--of a speech by one of the great Northern orators. Gladstone was born in Liverpool and died at Hawarden, although the eloquence manifested in the speech to be broadcast tonight is European rather than distinctively' North Country'. The first of the Midlothian election addresses, it was originally made at the St. George Street Music Hall, Edinburgh. It lasted for over three hours. But by judicious cutting it has been found possible to compress it into twenty minutes. Mr. Lloyd Pearson will broadcast the speech in the proper Gladstonian baritone.
